Please ignore the mess, I'm still working on this page.
I've been on a personal search for the best TCP/IP stack that fitted my needs, but none I had previously
installed were just right. Some too inflexible, too hard to navigate, too expensive, etc.. I wanted
something that would allow me to do what I wanted, and using it from a DOS shell was perfectly fine with
me. I still do most of my little work such as FTP/TELNET from the shell on my main computer, so why not
on the Palmtop? However, I did want a good newsreader and e-mail transport. Web browsing isn't a big
priority to me on the Palmtop, and when I need to I just use my Unix shell account and fire up Lynx.
So what have I tried?
Net Tamer
- Too hard to navigate
- Frequently doesn't connect properly
- Mail transport frequently locks up and doesn't complete, requiring an Emergency stop in NT
- Not flexible enough
WWW/LX
- Too expensive!!
- Other than that, it's good looking and slick, but not an open stack.
LXTCP
- Freeware! But EMail Rod and say "Thanks!"
- Uses WatTCP configuration, DOS PPPD driver, and open, standard stacks.
- Because it's open, you can use any TCP/IP software you desire.
Installing LX TCP
It ain't easy, honestly. But hopefully this guide will made it so. First off, go to
Rod Whitby's Home page and download the
files he tells you to, namely:
Finish it soon! :)
